Criminal Justice

Second Chances Take Many Shapes at Inc. Magazine Startup Event

October 19, 2018

Small business and startup-focused magazine Inc. is hosting its annual gala this week. One of the topics up for discussion? The role business can play in the formerly incarcerated reentering their communities. One panel in particular explores how different businesses have approached the opportunity. Inc. editor Maria Aspan will moderate the discussion, which will include CommunityWorks President and CEO Robert Andrews; All Square founder and CEO Emily Turner; and Dave’s Killer Bread Executive Director Genevieve Martin.

A recent Saturday Evening Post article featured Dave’s Killer Bread’s efforts to employ formerly incarcerated individuals, including Rahsaan Sloan, who was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for a gang-related felony. Sloan found a job at Dave’s after using his time behind bars to sign up for college courses and other training programs.

The Inc. panel illustrates one of many ways Stand Together Trust is working to elevate greater understanding of criminal justice issues. Earlier this year, the Institute and Society of Human Resources released a survey that found hiring managers and other company leaders are increasingly open to bringing formerly incarcerated individuals onto their payrolls.
